RECKLESS REASONS
“Sing it again mommy.” Three-year-old Trista yelled, as
she clapped her hands, smiled, and jiggled her little legs in
her booster seat.
“Again?” Her mother Cecil asked, laughing.
“Yeah, again, mom.” Six-year-old Brandon chimed in.
“Okay, one more time. Then mommy needs a break.”
She told her children, still smiling.
Cecil Young was driving down the expressway with
her children, singing songs, and trying to pass the time.
She had been driving what felt like forever, from
Dallas Texas to Michigan, when suddenly a work van
carrying rolls of steel slid in front of her in the lane she was
in, right when she was going through the construction.
Immediately slowing down wasn’t enough. Cecil
watched in horror, as the steel rods broke lose, slamming in
the windshield of her van, and smashing it.
For a moment, a split second, Cecil realized her and
her children were going to die. Her last thought before
darkness claimed her was she and her children were too
young.
When Cecil opened her eyes, she was surrounded
with a piercing bright light, which make her squint.
Somehow, Cecil knew she was standing, and suddenly
she remembered what happened. Frantic, she screamed for
her children.
Empty echoes of her voice, bounced back to where she
stood.
“It won’t work. Brandon and Trista can’t hear you, Cecil.”
A deep voice told her.
“Where are my children, and how do you know my
name?” She asked petrified.
“Your children are gone, and it’s my job to know your
name.”
“Gone? Where are they? Please tell me?” Her voice
was rough with emotion.
“I can’t tell you, Cecil. I will tell you that they’re safe.”
“That’s not good enough. I want my children, and I want
them now.” She sobbed.
“I’m sorry, that’s not possible.” The voice told her.
“Why?” Cecil asked, feeling helpless.
“Because I told you, their not here. Now, I must go, and
you must sleep.”
“No don’t leave me please. Even though I can’t see you,
please don’t go.”
“I have too. I have other things to look after.”
“Fine, if you have to go, tell me where I am.”
“I can’t tell you that. You’ll find out soon enough.”
“No please, I’m begging you to tell me where I am, and what
you’ve done to my children.”
“I can’t tell you, but know that the children are safe.
Good-bye Cecil.”
The voice was suddenly soothing, floating over her
body, relaxing her.
Finally, she closed her eyes, and fell into a deep
slumber.
