THE RITUAL
Silver City, Michigan
June 2006

The sound was off in the distance, a high-pitched
vibration that echoed through the trees surrounding her
house. She stopped on the path, and shivered as it drifted
closer to where she was.
Her eyes shifted through the woods, and she knew
something was there.
The wind was a soft caress, but soon turned into a
vicious slap that stung her. She remained where she was
feeling both the vibration, and the pain as it tore through
her.
The bright red blood dripped, and stained the grass.
She watched as it pooled, and slithered through the
blades, almost touching her feet. Her eyes traveled over
the path of it, which led back to the woods.
She flinched when she heard the laughter, and shielded
herself against it.
Even though it closed around her, and echoed through
the trees, filling every fiber of her being with the touch of
death, she remained where she was.  Her breath became
steamy, as the fog rolled in, and frigid temperatures
surrounded her.
Something was out there, and she knew she should
leave, but she couldn’t make her feet move. Instead, she
watched, and listened.
The temperature continued to fall making her breathe
rapidly. Her hands were icy cold, and it hurt to move them.
Her body started to shake, and horrible images flooded her
mind with the twisted details of death. She tried to close
her eyes to block the hideous sight, but they remained
opened.  She waited.
Once the hissing started, the fog lifted, and the blood
disappeared.
Darkness fell, and the temperature warmed again to
match the comfortable June night.
She pulled her eyes away from the woods, rubbed her
arms, and ran to the safety of her house.
