UNSPOKEN  SECRET
“I hate my mother,” Kimmy Anne Washington
whispered as she stood before the fountain in
downtown Plymouth. She watched her hand
tremble as she touched the edge. She took a deep
breath and studied the rushing water swirling
through the marble bowl, and she realized it was
mimicking her heartbeat which was pounding
through her body. She was angry. More upset
than she had ever been.

The argument she had that morning with her
mother had been brutal. Her mother always said
things to her that should never be spoken aloud.

The intense pain Kimmy’s mother had caused her
was beyond words. The truth was simple. She
despised her mother.

She turned away from the turbulent water in the
fountain and stared across the street, as she
thought about the argument that happened less
than one hour ago. She had been in her bedroom,
where she spent most of her time, thinking about
the nightmare she had the night before, when, as
usual, her mother barged in without knocking.
“That’s it! Give me your cell phone!” her mother’s
voice pierced the room.
“Are you joking right now, Mom?” Kimmy asked.
“Do I look like I’m joking?” her mother’s voice
was icy.
Kimmy rolled her eyes. “Why are you taking my
phone this time?”
Her mother stared at her and smirked. “Because I
can, I’m your mother, and as such I can do what I
want and no one will ever stop me. Besides, look
at you. If you even think that I’m not smart enough
to know that you’re up to trouble, then you’re
sadly mistaken.”
“What are you talking about?”
“I know what you did last night! Don’t stand there
looking innocent either. I saw the whole thing.”
“What whole thing? Last night I was here and
right now you’re not making any sense,” Kimmy’s
voice rose, as she watched her mother pacing
back and forth agitated.
“Don’t play stupid with me, Kimmy. It won’t work.
If you want to continue to be a bad girl, I’ll have to
make it so that you have no freedom. Besides, I
can’t have you running the streets behaving like a
tramp. It’s unacceptable.”
“Mother, I was home last night, remember?” As
she studied her mother, she wondered what kind
of story she would concoct this time. Her mother
was notorious for lying about things that never
happened.
“You were not. You were out gallivanting with that
boy from school. The one I don’t like. The one you’
re not allowed to be friends with. You know the
rules and you never listen. Well this time you will!”
her mother was screaming her eyes shot venom
towards Kimmy.
